In Tokyo, we set out to find the cutest animal cafe in town. Unfortunately, I am allergic to cats so I had to cross that off my list. When we heard about hedgehogs, we were super excited! I’ve never encountered a hedgehog in real life, I’ve only seen them in viral videos on the internet. We booked an hour-long play session at Hedgehog Home & Cafe, which was super close to Shibuya Crossing.
THE CAFE
Before we entered we checked in at the reception desk and choose which snacks we wanted to feed the hedgehogs. You can choose different time slots and food is additional. The cafe is a large room with multiples cases lining the walls. The cafe and cases were house themed, so they had props like bathtubs, beds, and pillows. Super cute! In the middle, they have another large case with baby hedgehogs (they were only two months old!) and additional merch for sale. We suggest getting the hour-long session because you can move from cage to cage! In the back of the room, there was an automatic drink dispenser. Coffee, water, and tea were unlimited and included in your payment.
PLAYTIME
With our 1 hour reservation, we were able to visit as many cases as we wanted. It was nice to have that flexibility, all the hedgehogs had different personalities! We wore safety gloves before picking them up, just in case they bite. We were able to pick up the hedgehogs and cuddle them in our hands. Some just wanted food, so we used the provided tweezers to feed them kibble and little worms. There were hedgehogs that had little hats and costumes, so insta-worthy! Our favorite one to hang out with was a sleepy little fellow (we spent our last 20 minutes with this one). When we picked him up he just curled up and slept on his side, it was the cutest thing ever and totally made the visit worth it.
Overall it was such a unique experience! If I could get the hedgehog through the airport and customs, I would totally want to take one home. If you’re a local you can purchase one of the hedgehogs, if you’re looking for a new pet! When our time was up we returned our gloves and packed up our stuff. The staff was super friendly and helpful and gave us a souvenir sticker on our way out. Thank you Hedgehog Home Cafe! If you decide to go, I suggest making a reservation online!
